EP49 - Allergic to Her Face - Then Explant Adds MORE Metal TWICE - Nikita’s Story
After a devastating accident cost Nikita her eye and left her facing extensive facial reconstruction, she thought surgery would be the beginning of her recovery.Instead, it became the beginning of another nightmare.
Surgeons used metal implants and surgical clips to reconstruct her face and jaw. But when Nikita began experiencing reactions she believed were connected to the implanted metal, the very materials intended to help restore her life became another source of suffering.
An at-home patch test showed a positive reaction to nickel, although Nikita has not undergone Lymphocyte Transformation Testing (LTT). What followed was an exhausting series of surgeries, including procedures intended to remove problematic metal—only for additional metal to be implanted.
In this episode of Heavily Metalled, Nikita shares her extraordinary journey through traumatic injury, facial reconstruction, suspected metal hypersensitivity, and the struggle to get the medical care she needed. She also discusses the physical and emotional toll of repeated surgeries and the challenges of advocating for herself.
In This Episode You Will Learn:
Why metal hypersensitivity should be considered when patients experience unexplained complications following implant surgery.
Why identifying potential metal sensitivities can be complicated - Patch testing does not detect Type IV systemic metal hypersensitivity.
Why removing problematic surgical hardware isn't always straightforward—and how additional metal can sometimes be introduced during revision procedures.
The importance of informed consent, knowing what materials are being implanted, and advocating for yourself when medical treatments aren't going as expected.
Nikita has generously shared photographs documenting her facial reconstruction, subsequent surgeries, and recovery.
